Good but not great

I own this pump and a Medela Pump in Style. I bought this one after a friend recommended it, as I pump multiple times a day both at work & home & didn't want to carry my other one back & forth to work.
The pros of this pump: a little cheaper than the Medela (or at least it was when I was looking), fairly quiet, does a reasonably good job, milk can't get into the pump motor (as with the Medela pump), & it's easy to use just one pump if you want to for some reason.
The down sides: less portable than the backpack style Medela, heavier bottles & shields (makes this pump difficult to use with a hands-free pumping bra), more parts to clean, harder to find replacement parts (even though I live in a big city w/lots of big box baby stores), harder to position on the breast when using the comfort shield, and overall doesn't pump as efficiently as the Medela (I consistently get less milk w/this pump).
Spend the extra few bucks and get the Pump in Style. It's worth it.

| This has been a good pump. Only takes 15-20 minutes to pump at the same time. The rubber covers for the part that attaches to your boob is pointless I shortly after removed and was way happier. The bottles when you set your pump down are very top heavy and was disappointing how easily they would spill. Over all a very good pump for your money. |

| This is my favorite. I used the hospital grade Medela and the manuel Avent. This pump really worked the best for me. I liked being able to hold the suction until the milk stopped coming. It was quite and smoothe. It was easy to work. Yes all the pumps have to be put together it didnt take long to do and I just kept it in the bag ready to go. I would recommend this pump to anyone. If I do have another child I will get this pump again! |
Wish I could give 0 or negative stars for product and Customer Service

Phillips Avent just doesn't want to stand behind their faulty products and poor engineering designs. I guess I was one of the 'lucky' ones since my pump worked for a total of 6 months before dying on me when compared with others.
However, I think if you are paying almost $300 for any item it should at least last for a year if not longer. I'm now going through the arduous task of speaking with one of their lousy customer representatives to have my pump either fixed or replaced. The fact that they don't offer replacement parts is a complete hassle. On top of the lousy craftsmanship of the pump, the bottles leak causing a major inconvenience when feeding my son.
Please take my advice and go for Medela for the pump and Born Free or Dr Brown for your baby bottles or at least research further and read all the other negative reviews on this product.
Here's a list of Cons I have experienced:
1) Pump malfunctioned after 6 months of light use (twice/daily)
2) Baby Bottles leak when feeding
3) Cool packs that were provided broke and my freezer is now a blue mess
4) Hose barb cracked on the second pump assembly and will cost me over $30 to replace FROM AVENT!!! (Why charge so much for a small plastic piece that probably costs a nickel to make?)
Pros (when the pump was functioning)
1) Variable speed adjustment
2) Small and compact

If you do decide to stick with Avent, I wish you the best of luck with their product and hope you can reach customer service when your product fails (which it most certainly will). |
Essential part back-ordered for months

I've been using this pump for 3 months from 1-3 times per day and overall it's been great. I haven't had any chafing, which some people have complained about with the Medela. I generally get a total of 6-10 oz. per pumping session, which is not what everyone will get but at least that gives an idea of what's possible with this pump if you have that much milk. There are a lot of parts to clean, sterilize, dry and put back together during a half hour pumping break at work, but I haven't used another pump so I'm not sure how that compares. (If you are pumping at work, you will want to get a microwave steam sterilizer.)
The pump works very well for me, but I have now had two major issues with this product and I felt I had to share them with other women who are about to spend close to $300. The first is the design. The pump comes with 9 oz and 4 oz bottles. Because the bottle is unstable while the pump head is attached, they have included a stand that fits the 4 oz bottles. Unfortunately, the stand doesn't fit the 9 oz bottles. I need the 9 oz bottles and I had a feeling when I first started using the pump that someday I would be trying to attach the bottles and pumps to the tubing and they would fall. This de-sterilizes your parts. Even worse, when this actually happened, the prong on the pump body snapped right off. I can still use the pump for now because the prong is only in use on one side at a time. However, I'm afraid that it's only a matter of time before the other side breaks as well, so I decided to call customer service to replace the pump body. My second issue is with Avent's parts and customer service. When I called customer service, they were not interested in my concerns about the top-heavy design of the pump. BUT the worst part of all is that the pump body has been on back order for months and they could not tell me when I would receive a new part! The customer service rep claimed that since the pump is used by so many women, the part is in high demand. My question is this- if the part is in high demand, why doesn't Avent a) think about why so many women have to replace the part and b) manufacture a few more parts to compensate? It's disappointing that Avent doesn't take better care of customers who have spent hundred of dollars on their pump and probably even more money on the bottles and accessories that go with the pump. I am keeping the number to the hospital lactation consultant handy so that I can rent a pump ASAP if/when the other pump body breaks because my milk supply is not going to wait for their manufacturing back-up.
