Beware - Lactation Consultants Advise Against This Pump
|

I have owned this pump for 7 months now. I have been using it at least 4x a day for the past 5 months. I love how portable the pump is. I can take it anywhere. I take it to and from work every day. I also prefer the larger valve on this pump to the smaller valves on the other medela styles. I love the monitor showing me how long I have pumped for. And the option to switch between the fast pumping and the let down mode. Lastly, I love that it runs on a rechargable battery. I can go at least 2 days without charging it.
However, during the past several weeks, my milk supplied has taken a major dip. I spoke with a few lactaction consultants, and companies who rent out medical grade pumps, and the consensus is that this is not the best medela pump and it does not simulate the baby's sucking as well as the pump in style advanced. They say that the pump in style advanced is 'stronger.' They have suggested that I rent a medical grade pump to boost my supply, however, once I go back to exclusively using the freestyle, my supply would probably dip down again.
Given that advice, I strongly suggest you speak with other lactaction consultants if you plan to use this pump several times a day while at work or perhaps pump exclusively. And you should look into the pump in style advanced models.
I do not regret my choice in this pump since it is so portable and convenient. I have thought about purchasing a pump in style advanced to keep in my office and to use this at home and for travel. At this point though, I am just hoping that they get the freestyle up to par with the pump in style advanced by the time I have my next child!!
(oh and if you are wondering about the handsfree option on this pump, I personally do not use it regularly, though I have tried it several times and once you get the settings right, it is fairly simple to put together.) |
Best Pump!

| I have had this pump for a about 2 months. In comparison to the PIS Original this pump is 100 times better! It expresses milk quickly. It is much quieter than the original. Does not hurt at all. The rechargeable battery power is plus because there are no outlets to plug in at my work. You can pump for several sessions before needing a recharge. I highly recommend this pump. |

After using the Medela Symphony pump for a month after the birth of my daughter, I purchased the Medela Freestyle. The main reason for my choice had to do with portability. However, the Medela Freestyle is a disappointment for several reasons.
1.) The Freestyle has a strong vibration that the Symphony did not have. It is irritating to sensitive breast tissue, and quite frankly, sets my teeth on edge. In fact, it kind of gives me the creeps.
2.) The suction on my model decreased after less than one month of use. While there are nine levels of power, the suction only moderately increases for six of them - at which point, it just seems as if the vibration is getting stronger without the suction. This does nothing for improving production.
3.) Portability isn't all that is cracked up to be. The system weighs less than a pump in style. But, you aren't going to be up walking around with it.
4) As for being hands free, I still use a specialized bra instead of the freestyle equipment, which is a bit intimidating. This can be done with any model.
5) The pieces are a pain to clean. But, pieces on all of the pumps are a pain to clean.
For more than $300 for a simple piece of equipment, Medela pumps should be made with better quality. I am so sorry that I purchased this, although I don't know if any of the other models would be any better. At least they wouldn't have the creepy vibration which belongs more in an adult book store than on a breast pump. |

| Absolutely wonderful! It works great and so easy to travel with! The only negative is that it seems a lot louder than my previous Medela Pump. If I wake up to pump I have to go into a different room because it wakes my husband! |
Just stopped working barely into 5 months !

| I purchased my Medela Freestyle on Feb 8 2010 and started seeing the reduction in suction power a week back and first thought its the battery problem and y'day night it just stopped working even with the power charger connected !! Can't even call them as today (7/5) is a holiday so have to call them t'rrow to figure out the options.... Issue is I am a working Mom so not sure how I will survive for the next week or so when I send this for repair and wait for them to send the replaced unit (hoping hey will replace as its still under warranty) !! |
